Unfiltered wisdom from post exit founders
From Exit to Encore

This conversation with Ray was pure energy. What a cool fella. From the moment we started talking, you could feel it. The passion. The curiosity. The joy. This is someone who genuinely loves what he does and is brave enough to build a life around it.

What I admired most about Ray is his courage. Not many people would cash in their 401 to buy a Ferrari and bet on a business built around experience, passion, and joy. That decision alone tells you a lot about how Ray thinks. He does not play small. He backs himself.

What really struck me is how naturally Ray turned his love of cars and racing into a business. Not by forcing it, but by listening closely to customers and spotting patterns others missed. He realised people did not want rentals. They wanted experiences. That shift in language and positioning changed everything.

There is also a raw honesty in how Ray talks about the reality behind a ‘sexy business’. Moving heavy equipment. Managing risk. Dealing with accidents. Always needing backup cars so customers are never disappointed. The pressure to deliver unforgettable experiences every single time. This is not glamour. It is responsibility. And if you mess-up, everyone is going to hear about it.

Ray’s first exit came partly because of that complexity. What followed was an exploration phase that many founders will recognise. Real estate. Franchise opportunities. Even coming close to becoming a Chick fil-A franchisee (yum). Searching for what comes next.

Eventually Ray found his way to a business not designed to maximise money, but to maximise enjoyment. A business that fits your life, not the other way around. One where fun, passion, and experience are the point.

This episode is a reminder that the second act does not have to look like the first. It can be lighter, more intentional and built around what actually makes you happy. That might be the real freedom after exit.

Can’t wait to hang out with Ray again. Hopefully in an Aston Martin.
