This conversation with John was awesome, and different. Not louder. Not flashier. Just quietly profound.
John has a very understated way about him. Genuine, thoughtful and curious. Almost disarming in how normal he feels. There is no bravado here. No performative success. Just someone who has done the work and is deeply motivated to share what he has learned. Midwestern vibes. oozing.
What I really liked about John is how eager he is to give the insight away. Not to position himself. Not to sell anything. Just to help other founders avoid the mistakes that so many of us make after we sell. And that generosity runs right through this conversation.
On the business side, there are some very sharp lessons. John talked openly about how surrounding himself with better people changed his business deliberately rather than hoping the market would magically reward it. A learning I wish I knew earlier in fact, and something I coach founders on now.
But where this episode really landed for me was the transition.
John’s own post exit experience led directly to writing his brilliant book (I have read three times) – Beyond the Exit. Not because he handled it perfectly, but because he did not.
He talks candidly about the phases founders go through after a sale. The honeymoon period. The boredom. The loss of identity. The urge to start another business too quickly. The mistake of thinking money will fill the gap. One idea that really stayed with me is the shift from being the centre of your own universe to suddenly being the centre of nothing.
As founders, we are needed all day every day. Employees. Customers. Advisors. Everyone wants something from us. Then one day it all stops. Overnight. Yikes. Like being a popular professional sportsperson one day, and retired, old news the next.
The key is finding where to direct skills, energy, and time in a way that brings meaning rather than just momentum.
What I loved most was how John framed the next chapter as an opportunity to serve. Not to accumulate more and prove anything. But to contribute to community, family, and to society in some way.
This episode is not just about selling a business. It is about what comes after the applause fades. And why thinking about that early might be one of the smartest decisions a founder ever makes.
Great insight from a great guy.
